Desmond Chan

Back in early 2014 when we at www.aoku3D.com started looking into 3DPrint consumer products and their designers, we were surprised – and impressed – that there was a jewelry designer from Hong Kong that was prominently featured on i.materialise.com Desmond Chan.

Returning to Hong Kong in 2002 ago after graduating from computer animation in UK, Desmond continues to work in a major toy company as head of digital media and animation. Desmond took up 3D printing by accident: unable to find a suitable X’mas gift for his wife in 2013, he decided to try his hand at making one with a 3D printer instead. "That was my first jewelry design, and she still enjoys wearing it," he said with a smile.

From what began as a weekend hobby, Desmond went on to found Vulcan Jewelry, creating more and more innovative 3D-printed designs. While his sources of inspiration are diverse, Desmond is particularly attracted to Art Nouveau as well as Salvador Dali’s surrealist use of natural forms.

Desmond is an example of artist-designers of various disciplines increasingly attracted to the realm of 3D printing, which allows for the integration of creation and production in one continuous process. We at aoku3D are proud to be associated with dedicated innovators as exemplified in the person of Desmond Chan.
